Stephen Robinson was born on 25 January 1856 in Bishopwearmouth, an area of what is now Sunderland. He was the son of a shipwright named Thomas Robinson and his wife Ann Miller. He had at least two older siblings; William (b.1849) and Ann (b.1853) though there may have been many others. The 1861 census records Stephen (5) living at 12 Braugton Street, Sunderland with his parents; Thomas (38) and Ann (35), and his siblings; William (11) and Ann (7). This time Thomas's occupation is described slightly differently as "Ship Carpenter". Birthplaces given the same as the 1851 census; all in Sunderland apart from his mother, Ann, born in Houghton. The 1871 census records Stephen as a sixteen year old "Brass Finisher", living with his parents, brother and sister. He married Isabella Camilla Sewell probably around 1877 in Sunderland. They proceeded to have at least seven children in Sunderland between 1878 and 1895. The 1881 census records twenty-five year old Stephen as a "Brass Finisher". He lives with his wife and three young children. All record their birthplaces as Sunderland apart from his wife, hers being Bishop Middleham, Durham. The 1891 census records thirty-five year old Stephen as a "Brass Finisher", with his wife and six children. They live at 2 Slater Street and record their birthplaces the same as other censuses. In the birth certificate of his son Stephen in 1895 Stephen still records his occupation as "Brass Finisher". I don't know when either Stephen or Isabella died. |
